Feb 19: Winter Storm Watch issued by NWS

The National Weather Service office in Wakefield, VA (AKQ) issued a Winter Storm Watch effective from 2:42 PM, Wednesday, February 19 thru the morning of Friday, February 21.

The Winter Storm Watch includes the following area counties/municipalities:

Northeastern NC Counties:
Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Gates, Hertford, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Northampton

Southeastern VA Counties/Cities:
Chesapeake, Hampton, Isle of Wight, Newport News, Norfolk, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Southampton, Suffolk, Virginia Beach

Expect rain mixing with and changing to snow affecting portions of southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina, from late Thursday afternoon through Friday morning.

Snow accumulations of 2 to 3 inches, with locally higher amounts are possible. North winds could gust as high as 30 to 35 mph at the immediate coast Thursday night into Friday morning.

Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes.

A Winter Storm Watch is issued by the National Weather Service when there is a possibility of heavy snow or potential of significant ice accumulations. The watch is typically issued 12 to 48 hours before the storm’s arrival in the given area.
