Arond 12 noon today, the Currituck County School system announced that Central Elementary School in Maple has been placed on “soft lockdown”.
According to the post on the Currituck County Schools Facebook page, soft lockdown means movement within the building is not restricted; however staff and students will not be allowed outside of the building.
The post goes on to relate that the lock down is due to a suspect in custody of the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office had gotten away from deputies and may be in the area.

Good morning, CES families: Out of an abundance of caution, Central Elementary School has been placed on a soft lockdown. Movement within the building is not restricted, but staff and students will not be permitted outside.
Currituck County Sheriff’s Office reported that a suspect in custody has gotten away from staff and may be in the area. Again, as a precaution, all students and staff will remain in the building until an all clear is given by the Sheriff’s Office.
